“Marking our city for God”

So, a local preacher wants to show what a righteous city Houston is by surrounding the city with 200-foot tall instruments of torture and execution, starting with the side of I-45. Apparently, apart from killing lots of migratory birds, these crosses will make our problems go away and “mark our city for God.”

Pointing out that the idea that putting up giant crosses will make life better, or that spending a fortune on giant crosses while people down the road are living in poverty seems like a rather odd reading of the teachings of the guy they adore (not to mention his dad’s admonitions about idolatry, or the various warnings about being showy about your devotion), is beside the point. Sane people know this.

But I’m more interested in that phrase: “marking our city for God.” It’s fascinating.

Two things come to mind.

1. Does God needs markers to find things? Will he forget to rapture Houstonian believers if there isn’t a big beacon to remind him that they’re here? Perhaps the crosses should be arranged to spell out, “SOULS HERE” with a big arrow.

2.

They’re having a “Make Your Mark” fundraising campaign to raise the money for it.

God marks cities all the time… just look at how he marked New Orleans!
