Local flavor

Kroger now is putting these “taste of the Southwest” inserts on shelves near relatively local products, calling attention to things that are produced nearby. I think this is a generally good thing; I’d rather buy local food.

The first one I noticed was next to the Jesus Milk, which is indeed a Texas product, from San Antonio. And, when you buy it, you can help support the local Republicans. Sigh. It’s really, really good milk.

Today at the checkout I noticed the same sign next to another product: Starbursts. Yes, the gummy fruit candies. (I loved them when I was a kid; if you eat a whole bunch, your tongue turns a funny purplish color!)

This one has me confused; Starbursts are made by Mars. I wasn’t sure where their US headquarters was (and let’s face it, even if it were in Texas, calling Starbursts a local flavor is really pushing it).

Mars is in McLean, Virginia. So what’s the deal with Starbursts being a unique southwestern flavor? They signs were next to two kinds of the candies in different locations on the rack, so I don’t think it was a mistake.
